OpenAI recently revealed that it has disrupted over 20 malicious networks across the globe, all of which tried to exploit its platform for harmful activities. These attempts, spanning from malware debugging to creating fake social media personas, show how cybercriminals are evolving in their misuse of AI technology.
Among the activities, attackers used OpenAI tools for tasks such as writing website articles, generating biographies for social media profiles, and even creating AI-generated profile pictures for fake accounts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
Malicious Use of AI on the Rise
Despite the rise in these malicious activities, OpenAI stated that it hasn’t seen any groundbreaking developments in the attackers’ ability to create advanced malware or build massive online followings. - Cyber Av3ngers: Linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), this group focused on researching industrial control systems using AI tools.
- Storm-0817: An Iranian hacker group used OpenAI’s tools to debug Android malware and scrape Instagram profiles, translating LinkedIn profiles into Persian.
Social Media Influence Operations
OpenAI also took down clusters of accounts linked to influence operations like A2Z and Stop News. These groups generated English and French content and spread it across social media and websites. One particularly noteworthy operation, Stop News, made heavy use of AI-generated images to amplify their messages, often using DALL·E for vibrant, attention-grabbing visuals.
Other networks, such as Bet Bot and Corrupt Comment, were found using OpenAI’s API to engage users in conversations on X and direct them to gambling sites.

This crackdown by OpenAI comes shortly after the company banned accounts tied to the Iranian influence operation Storm-2035, which used ChatGPT to generate misleading content.
